Allergy Relief Products

An allergy is an immune system malfunction that causes the body to have a hypersensitive reaction to a normally day-to-day substance. There are different types of allergy; nasal allergy, asthma allergy, food allergy, insect allergy, skin allergy but one may be reacting to only one type or some among all the allergies. One may be allergic to food, pollen, dust, insects, etc. So it is better to first test for the substance causing the allergy.

An allergy test of one form or another is often needed to determine which substance is causing the adverse reaction, if the problem seems to be originating from a food an allergy test may reveal that the individual is not allergic to the suspected food but to a certain element present in the food.

Although there are many allergy testing methods used to determine the presence of allergens, but the three most common allergy testing procedures are skin tests, elimination tests, and the radioallergosorbent test (RAST). It is seen that the accuracy of these tests varies widely and even the same test performed at different times may yield different results. It is also possible for a person to react to a substance during testing but no reaction in normal exposure.

Allergy skin testing is the most used of the three methods but it varies in methodology. With the scratch test a small amount of the suspected allergen is placed on the forearm or upper arm and then introduced under the surface by scratching or pricking. The skin is then observed for swelling or redness. Skin tests are useful in detecting respiratory allergies, penicillin allergy, insect allergies, and food based allergies.

Food allergies are also often investigated via an elimination diet. Suspect foods are removed from the diet for several weeks and then re-introduced one at a time with the person monitoring their reactions. The radioallergosorbent or RAST test is performed in a laboratory and tests for specific amounts of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies that will be present in the blood during a true allergic reaction.

Does anyone know any non-antihistamine allergy relief products?
I am having allergy skin tests in a few days… and im not allowed to have any antihistamines 4 days prior.

  • Helen DDS:

Sorry. The definition of an allergy is the release of histamine. Anything that would help would block histamine. Sounds like you might need to deal with some topical creams if you have hives. Or just get a couple of boxes of tissues for the nose and eyes.
    Good luck.

    Hi JCDB

Here are some ideas on how to heal the issue. You also need to learn about cleansing the body of toxins by doing a colon and liver cleanse to heal for long term health.

    Cause of Allergies
Overall, the underlying causes of allergy and sensitivity are dietary and lifestyle factors specifically titled as imbalanced immune function, barrier function default (such as "leaky gut" syndrome), and toxic overload. Each of these are, in varying degrees, responsible for the development and continuation of allergy and sensitivity. A colon and liver cleanse would help rid of the toxins in the blood.

Herbal Medicine: There are a variety of herbs that offer relief from allergies, such as goldenseal, red sage, and goldenrod. To reduce mucus, try astringents such as yarrow and myrrh (Commiphora myrrha). These help to contract inflamed tissues and reduce secretions and discharges. To strengthen immune response use echinacea, astragalus root, goldenseal root, and Pfaffia paniculata (suma or Brazilian ginseng). These herbs can be effective and safe for treating weakened immune systems.

Eating raw Garlic and Onions will provide relief as well. The more you use the faster the relief will come.

Cayenne pepper is a favorite herb among those treating allergy patients. The active ingredient is a strong anti-inflammatory, and it is recommend to allergy suffers, including asthma patients, as a simple and effective treatment. Sprinkling liberal amounts of the pepper on meals for a few days can provide relief. Or better yet eat them raw and sweat for a few minutes. Watch your sinus clear up quickly.

Although herbal remedies have shown excellent results in reducing allergy/sensitivity symptoms, using herbs to treat allergies involves an individual approach. Some particularly effective anti-inflammatory herbs are stinging nettle, Ginkgo biloba, and licorice. Chinese skullcap, ephedra, and feverfew are others to consider for treating allergy symptoms. Patients whose conditions are severe should consult with a trained herbalist or naturopath.

A major symptom of allergies is gastrointestinal upset, including bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Demulcent herbs can alleviate these symptoms (demulcent is a term used by herbalists to describe an herb that has a protective effect on the mucous membranes by minimizing irritation). The most commonly used herbs are marshmallow, slippery elm bark, cabbage juice, okra, fenugreek, and aloe vera.

Homeopathy: Homeopathy has widespread applications for the treatment of allergies. In many situations, minute diluted doses of the substance a person is allergic to can be prepared as a homeopathic solution that triggers the body`s natural ability to heal itself.

Homeopathic remedies are best prescribed by a competent homeopath. Self-diagnosis is discouraged due to the variety of factors that must be considered before the appropriate treatment is selected. However, the following remedies can be helpful: Ferrum phos, lycopodium, and silica.

Juice Therapy: A juice fast of organic vegetable juices for 2-3 weeks can help detoxify the body, thus improving its ability to cope with allergies. Two useful juice combinations for this purpose are beet, carrot, and cucumber; and carrot and celery. For added benefit, add a small piece of ginger root to either juice combination.

    Best of health to you

You could try just a little SUDAFED. Not anti-histamine, no leukotriene blocker, no mast cell inhibitors, no beta-blocker.

Just plain and simply will help DRY out some of the secretions. Or, try the nasal spray—but, these do rebound. For a few days, they may help with the drying of the mucus membranes, and decrease the sneezing, itchy nose/eyes/throat from the over release of the chemicals that are causing fluid everywhere—eyes to water, nose to swell/run, mucus to thicken, the cough from the above symptoms.

If you get a nasal spray (like dristan, or such), check the label for the ACTIVE ingrediant, and ASK the pharmacist to make sure it is NOT an antihistamine. There are so many different formula’s by the same company, the name DRISTAN is used to cover more than one nose spray, with more than one drug now. Just like VISINE has more than one formula and drug.

    Hope this helps some…..

ps….they told my husband that he COULD have stayed on his NASAL CROM, but, since that BLOCKS the MAST CELLS from RELEASING HISTAMINE….that would have made the testing MUTE, and VOID. So, best to avoid all the the classes of drugs I mentioned above. Also, you may wish to call and check to make sure you CAN take SUDAFED and or DRISTAN-type nose spray before the testing. GOOD LUCK to you.

Get rid of the Bounce and Glade Plug-Ins and other fragranced products that you use in your home and on your body. You will see a DRAMATIC change in your health.

There has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of asthma and other allergic diseases over the last few decades which are now major public health problems and an enormous burden on health care resources.

Common manifestations of allergy include asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and food allergy. Subjects with allergic diseases are usually atopic, and develop sensitization to common allergens. Having said that atopy is only one part of the oh so very complex allergy spectrum.

The disease course of asthma is influenced heavily by the home environment and the exposure to multiple potentially harmful compounds may begin prenatally and continue through childhood. Observational studies have suggested that an intense exposure to a particular allergen, during pregnancy could increase the risk of offspring being sensitized to that allergen and having allergic asthma. It is now known that allergens can pass through the placenta and sensitize the foetus.

Solutions for these exposures are available and should be actively sought out by all. Knowledge gaps exist, in particular concerning the development of the complex nervous system of a child in the milieu of multiple exposures

Examples of harmful home exposures include lead, which can be a particularly harmful neurotoxin along with other neurotoxins, such as pesticides, which work by poisoning household pests and affect similar metabolic pathways in children. The quality of air and the presence of mold, ETS, and pet dander in the home contribute to or detract from the health of a child.

Homes contain a myriad of products, chemicals, and objects that offer exposure hazards to children. The 5 categories of substances most frequently involved in paediatric exposures are cosmetics and personal care products, cleaning substances, analgesics, foreign bodies, and topical agents. So as a parent you should make a conscious effort in knowing what it is exactly you are bringing in to your home and making sure your child is safe. A note should be made here about a common indoor work activity for youth across many industries which is cleaning and use of cleaning products. Acute exposures to disinfectants and sanitizers usually involve inflammation, oedema, and burns not to mention the development of respiratory problems and increasing chances of developing cancers.

Target your focus on primary prevention. So instead of filling your home with anti this and anti that medications(secondary preventions by treating the symptoms)simply avoid exposing yourself and loved ones to agents that are suspected or known to be harmful. Remember brand loyalty kills and you do not need to be rich in order to be smart and stay healthy.

Lots of tissues … luckily its winter (if you have environmental allergies.

Keep your windows closed as much as possible, and wash your sheets & blankets in hot water.

I find a hot shower really helps when I have a sudden allergy attack.

Just hang in there…. and ask your allergist, pharmacist, or family doctor before you take anything.
